Jagiellonian University announced one of two Polish universities in ARWU Top 500
On 15 August, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy has published the latest edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking. According to the publication, there are only eight Polish universities in the first thousand positions, with only the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University making it into the first five hundred.
While in this year’s edition the Jagiellonian University’s rank dropped to 401–500 (specific positions are announced only for top one hundred universities), the University of Warsaw has risen to 301–400, meaning the two universities effectively switched places.
The six other Polish higher education institutions ranked in the publication are: AGH University of Science and Technology (701–800), Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (801–900), Gdańsk University of Technology (801–900, debut), Warsaw School of Technology (801–900), Medical University of Silesia (901–1000) and Medical University of Warsaw (901–1000). In comparison to the last year’s edition, only the University of Warsaw and Gdańsk School of Technology have improved their rank, with others dropping by one. Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and Wrocław University of Science and Technology did not make it onto the list this year.
The ranking is traditionally dominated by American higher education institutions. The top three universities this year are Harvard University, Stanford University, and University of Cambridge.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities has been published since 2003. Each year, the organisers rate universities around the world on the basis of objective indicators. These include the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university.
